PepsiCo, a global leader in the food and beverage industry, today announces the acquisition of its first electric truck, the Volvo FM Electric 4×2 model, which will assist with supplying raw materials and potatoes to the company’s snack plant in Popești-Leordeni.

The addition of this electric truck to Romania’s fleet supports PepsiCo’s global commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

By acquiring our first electric truck, we confirm our strong commitment to sustainability and reducing our environmental impact. The choice of the Volvo FM Electric 4×2 model reflects not only our efficiency goals but also our determination to adopt advanced technologies for a more sustainable future. Additionally, it is an important step that will help us test and make significant progress in finding more sustainable transportation methods within our local operations,” stated Daniel Drăgușin, Supply Chain Director, PepsiCo Romania.

The Volvo FM Electric 4×2 model has a total installed capacity of 540 kWh (6 battery modules of 90 kWh each) and can sustain a loaded range (40 tons) of up to 300 km per charging cycle. PepsiCo’s newest truck will be charged at the company’s own stations at its snack plant in Popești Leordeni, where fast charge capacity stations for heavy vehicles was installed last year.

Our electric trucks are essential for achieving our emission reduction goals at a group level: 50 percent by 2030 and 100 percent by 2040. Not only do they help with decarbonization, but they also offer energy efficiency, use renewable energy, and operate quietly, making them ideal for urban and nighttime use. We thank PepsiCo Romania for their trust, and we are proud to deliver the first Volvo FM Electric to a leader in the food and beverage industry committed to reducing CO2 emissions. We are dedicated to collaborating with our customers to decarbonize the transportation industry and to create the world we want to live in“, said Per Forsberg, General Manager of Volvo Romania.

At the end of 2023, 80 percent of PepsiCo’s fleet in Romania was replaced with hybrid vehicles. According to recent data and recommendations provided by the respective automotive manufacturer, PepsiCo estimates a 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions in 2023 compared to 2022 and a decrease of 46 percent compared to 2015.  Additionally, earlier this year, the company announced a 2.1 million USD investment in over 3,000 photovoltaic panels at its three facilities in Romania, to result in an annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by approximately 500 tons.
