    The award in this category is given to a company that has integrated a Track and Trace technology, which marks the next phase in the sustainability journey that the company has undertaken and which is visible through its performance and results. In collaboration with a company specializing in digitization services, the award-winning company today developed a digital solution to increase the transparency of its customers’ supply chain based on IoT (Internet of Things). This cutting-edge solution uses IoT-enabled trackers on pallets to provide real-time data via embedded sensors. This transparency enables more accurate logistics planning, minimizes disruptions and prevents losses, all of which contribute to a more efficient supply chain. In the 2 years since the new technology was implemented in Romania, around 40,000 kg of CO2 emissions have been saved through pallet losses prevented due to the use of this technology.

    In this category, we award an initiative implemented in 2023, intended to have a positive impact on society, including environmental protection, support for vulnerable people, investment in education and professional integration and the cultivation of responsible – sustainable behaviors.

    The award-winning program reached over 140,000 beneficiaries, disadvantaged children, adults, disabled people supported to continue their studies, adopt sustainable behavior towards the environment and who were helped to acquire new soft or digital/programming or life skills , essential for an independent life. In addition, more than 1,700 company employees (almost 3 times the program’s annual target) were actively involved in mentoring and specially designed teaching sessions, together with 16 NGOs, for the beneficiaries participating in each project.

    For the company awarded in this category, sustainability is an integral part of the circular business model. With the launch of the Now & Next Sustainability Strategy in 2020, the company set ambitious short- and long-term goals that confirmed their commitment to the circular economy and to the goal of redefining packaging for a changing world. In doing so, the company replaced more than one billion pieces of plastic, 16 months ahead of its 2025 target. The company’s target was any primary or secondary plastic packaging that was now reduced or completely removed from customers’ packaging. The performance is rooted in a plastic replacement and reduction program set in 2020 as part of the Now & Next Sustainability Strategy.

    In this category, we award an information campaign to protect the environment. The campaign is a call to action initiated following a recent study carried out in collaboration with the research institute Ipsos Romania which shows that for 85% of Romanians, sustainability and caring for the environment are very important concepts, and for 87%, recycling is an aspect major. At the same time, 56% believe that too little is done in this area, and for 45% of those interviewed, paper and cardboard recycling is essential. Corrugated cardboard packaging is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution. Not by chance, according to the mentioned study, 9 out of 10 Romanians would rather or categorically be willing to replace plastic packaging with paper/cardboard ones.

    In this category, we are awarding the campaign “Set the tone for recycling, choose corrugated cardboard”, an initiative of ROMPAP – the Pulp and Paper Industry Board, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests.

    CIRCULAR ECONOMY INNOVATION OF THE YEAR

    This category rewards the results of the recycling processes of a company specialized in recycling and waste management, through which, following the collection of over one million mobile phones, the company recovered 34 kg of gold, 350 kg of silver and 15 kg of palladium , materials that can be reused in the composition of other electronic or industrial products. Following an analysis, the operator specializing in the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment out of use shows that, in general, Romanian consumers are tempted to keep old, defective mobile phones and throw them in inappropriate places, such as the trash, small appliances. After collecting over one million mobile phones, the company managed to recover some valuable components that can be reused in future electronic and household appliances.

    The award in this category is given to a company that announced that it reached more than 500,000 consumers who returned SGR packaging in a single day through the automated systems installed by the company and located at merchant return points throughout the country, within the System Guarantee-Return (SGR). In the first month of this year, the daily average of consumers returning packaging through the return systems installed by the company was 21,700, while in June, the daily average recorded was 454,000. Interest in SGR is steadily growing, so that at the beginning of July more than 500,000 consumers returned packaging through the company’s systems in a single day.

    The award in this category is given to a company that aims to make a contribution to climate action, an aspiration that it has anchored in its sustainability vision. As of 2020, with more than 400 locations worldwide, the group of which the Romanian subsidiary is a part has been generally carbon neutral. It has also created a technology that is “invented for life”. For the power generation segment, by 2030, the company plans to invest around €1 billion in heat pump technology. Hydrogen is also a strategically important market. By 2026, it has budgeted investments of around 2.5 billion euros in hydrogen technologies. For the electromobility segment, the company increased production of components for electric driving by 50% year-on-year.

    EXCELLENCE IN INCLUSIVE SOLUTIONS & SUSTAINABILITY

    The award in this category is given to a financial-banking institution whose sustainability report refers to the bank’s strategic initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for disadvantaged communities and stimulating sustainable development. These objectives cover several key areas such as:

    • Financial inclusion: expanding access to financial services for small and micro-enterprises

    • Educational support: Partners with over 60 merchants to provide training in technical skills, personal and professional development

    • Accessibility of medical services: partnership with over 1,000 clinics, with addressability for vulnerable people, to facilitate access to the necessary medical care

    • Green Energy Financing: Promoting sustainable solutions by financing solar energy systems for individual customers.

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

    The award of this category goes to a company that has innovated by creating a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Food Transition Index, which allows monitoring the achievement of objectives, accurately evaluating CSR performance and encouraging employees to get involved in these actions. The level of engagement reflects the company’s inclusive culture and robust training programs, which saw a 75% participation rate. The group reaffirmed its commitment to people with autism spectrum disorders by equipping 93 stores with rooms converted into “quiet spaces” and orientation maps. Copania annually organizes a series of campaigns, caravans and actions to raise awareness, involve and promote the concepts of inclusion, care for the environment, selective recycling and responsible consumption throughout the store network.

    GREEN TRANSITION

    The award in this category is given to a strategic company on the energy market in Romania, for which decarbonisation is a priority concern. In the context of global climate changes, the company’s ambition is “NetZeRomGAZ”, i.e. obtaining profit through the production and sale of hydrocarbons and electricity, including from renewable sources, in conditions of efficiency and business development with the achievement of zero net dioxide emissions of carbon until the year 2050. Thus, the company presents the new strategic approach of the company proposed until 2030, which is oriented towards the sustainable increase of the added value for the company, employees and shareholders. The strategy defines the strategic options and directions of action in the context of the green and digital transition towards the sustainable development of the company.

    SMART WASTE MANAGEMENT LEADERSHIP

    The award in this category is given to a company specializing in advanced waste management. With innovative technologies and a dedicated team, we bring positive changes, protecting the environment and building a green future, the company aims to emphasize aspects related to sustainability and responsibility towards the environment. As experts in the field of intelligent waste management, the company develops strategic partnerships with industry, government and local communities. Their vision is to contribute to an economy where no valuable material is wasted, but reintroduced into the economic circuit, thus stimulating the sustainable development of society.

    TECH FOR GOOD AWARD         

    In a world that today places increasing emphasis on sustainability, 20 years ago, the foundations of the most sustainable partnership that Romania has today were laid. In 1994, the first foundation in Romania was born, the Vodafone Foundation. Also in 1994, 20 years ago, the first partnership between Vodafone and Salvamont Romania was signed for the establishment of a call center for mountain rescues. 20 years later, Vodafone invests year after year in Salvamont, from the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment to the training of those who rescue people in difficult situations every year.

    This award goes to Vodafone.

    GREEN PRODUCTION PRACTICES

    The award in this category goes to a company that has been on the Romanian market for 26 years and now has a turnover of 170 million euros. So far, the company has operated investments totaling more than 250 million euros, especially in state-of-the-art technologies and equipment, in order to obtain products that meet the highest quality standards. The group has approximately 2,000 employees in 7 factories in Borsec, Bucharest, Bușteni, Sebeș and Stânceni. The Sebeș Brewery is a greenfield project completed in 2008, equipped with the most modern technology. Through this investment, the company can fully combine, for the first time, in a single plant, the latest manufacturing processes as well as leading technology with complete production and bottling lines – a total capacity of over 1 billion liters per year.

    SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING PRACTICES

    The prize of this category is given to a company that is the only brand of 360° integrated batteries manufactured in Romania, with 45 years of experience in the industry. The company is dedicated to innovation and the development of sustainable solutions that contribute to a clean energy future. Known for its innovations and commitment to quality and sustainability, with a global presence and a dedicated team of professionals, the company continues to be at the forefront of the automotive battery industry, contributing to the sustainable mobility of the future. A major aspect in the company’s production is represented by the strategy of recycling used batteries: thus up to 99% of the lead from a used battery is recycled, and 85% of the total battery components are reintroduced into the manufacturing process. The company says it has a 55% recycling rate compared to sales volumes in kg/year – it recycles lead-acid batteries regardless of manufacturer.

    NET ZERO STRATEGY OF THE YEAR

    The company awarded for its Net Zero strategy operates in a highly energy-intensive industry. According to the company’s statements, they have developed a sustainable development strategy since 20 years ago, when they operated massive investments in state-of-the-art technologies, in energy efficiency projects. It is currently investing in an innovative project that, upon completion, will place the company in the top ten companies in the world (excluding China) in the aluminum industry in terms of energy efficiency in electrolysis. A bit of technical background: Aluminum has some incredible properties and can be recycled endlessly, that’s why the company is developing a lot in the area of ​​Eco-recycling. To produce one ton of recycled aluminum it takes only 5% of the energy to produce one ton of electrolytic aluminum. All the investments made by the company supported the good sustainability performance, which then translated into a sustainability reporting appreciated by independent juries of various competences as one of the best in the market.

    The award in this category goes to aluminum producer Alro.

    SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING & COMMUNICATIONS

    The award in this category is given to a company that is part of a group with a turnover of 2.2 billion euros, with over 6,500 employees, in over 70 factories, from 20 countries and operates in the paper packaging industry with 4 divisions. The corrugated cardboard division was a greenfield investment at Salonta in 2007. One of the most important projects is the investment in solar panels, which aims to achieve energy independence and the investment in energy consumption monitoring systems. The VPK company has an investment plan for the next 5 years of several million euros for automation and production capacity. VPK Packaging Salonta is an important promoter not only of the circular economy concept, but also of cultivating close relationships with the community of which it is a part.

    BRAND OF THE YEAR

    The prize of this category is offered to a company present on the Romanian market for 18 years at the level and with 7500 people employed at the national level. In 2023, the company published its third Corporate Sustainability Report, communicating transparently and available to all stakeholders the impact of their sustainability actions. Among the most important categories included in the report are the sustainability strategy and the completion of the Climate Plan 2030, the accelerated process of decarbonizing both store operations and products. The company supports over 90 social projects, investing 2.5 million lei in such projects during the reporting period. In 2023, the retailer has developed together with local producers 34 new supply chains through which it obtains sustainable products, reaching a total number of 73. The award-winning company today promotes a healthy diet and supports local producers, collaborating with over 85% Romanian suppliers, including local ultra-producers, and the food range consists of over 90% Romanian products.

    The sustainability brand of the year is Auchan Retail Romania.

    Categories dedicated to key leaders in sustainability

    PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR IN SUSTAINABILITY

    The award of this category is given to an expert and promoter of sustainability concepts. He asserts that real strategic development cannot take place outside of technical specificity, communication and deployment of strategic vision, deep understanding of stakeholder interests, integrity, solid reputation, technical skills, presentation and negotiation skills, diplomacy, creativity and the ability to motivate the people. Basically, we find him in this vision and for those who work closely with him, he represents an expert voice and a landmark. He specializes in planning, financial modeling, negotiation, regulatory and public affairs issues, strategy design, stakeholder management, process optimization, waste management, circular economy and sustainability. As he himself says, simplification is complexity solved – through results.

    Thus, the Sustainability Ambassador this year is Mr. Raul Pop, director of programs at the Ecoteca, among many other projects in which he is involved.

    SUSTAINABILITY AMBASSADOR

    The prize for the personality of the year in the promotion of sustainability is given to a journalist, producer and presenter for TV productions such as “Planeta esti tu”, “Focus on Europe”, “Scena Deschisă”. The award-winning media professional today is involved in covering topics related to climate change, particularly through his contributions to shows or segments that focus on environmental and sustainability issues. She laid the foundations for the first TV show on climate change in Romania. As a journalist, she plays a crucial role in raising awareness of climate change, highlighting its impact on local and global communities, and exploring potential solutions to mitigate its effects. By providing in-depth coverage and analysis, she helps shape public discourse and influence decision-making on key climate and environmental issues.

    The award for the Game Changer in Sustainability category goes to the company created and supported by a consortium of private and public shareholders and which is the spring behind the ambitious Guarantee-Return System (SGR) in Romania. This initiative is designed to create a cleaner and greener environment while complying with European Union collection and recycling standards. Six months after the introduction of the Guarantee-Return System in Romania, the company achieved major achievements and we list only a few of them:

    • A total of 75,000 retailers have signed up to the system, with 35,000 already employed by signing the collection contract

    • Manufacturers managed over 150,000 tons of DRS packaging

    • Over 50% of Romanian consumers have actively embraced DRS, reflecting growing audience participation and acceptance of the program.

    The award for this category goes to a company that globally undertakes the implementation of the “A world without waste” strategy, which reflects the vision for a circular economy and addresses both the responsibility of creating more sustainable packaging and the reduction of environmental pollution from packaging. The company is committed to net zero emissions along the entire value chain by 2040 – NetZeroBy40. As a result of an ecological investment of approximately 55 million lei, including 17.5 million lei in state aid, the company became the first soft drink producer in Romania able to produce recycled PET domestically. State-of-the-art equipment has supported the transition of the entire packaging portfolio to 100% recycled PET (rPET), enabling a constant supply of food-grade recycled plastic.

    We award in the Partnership of the Year category an initiative of a Bank and Association through which the financial institution supports the association with 1 million euros to start the construction of the Marie Curie medical campus. This initiative, as well as others, will be supported by the launch of a card that symbolizes the bank’s continuous involvement in supporting causes with a positive impact in the community. The Good Yellow Card is a less common financial instrument. Payment after payment, the new card comes with a special mission: that of supporting the Association and is at the same time an original story, which the bank wants to tell through the Yellow Card That Does Good campaign. The bank estimates that approximately 100 million transactions will be made with this card in the coming period.

    This year, we are awarding the partnership between Raiffeisen Bank and the Association “Gives Life”, through the financial-banking instrument The Yellow Card That Does Good.

And in the responsible asset management strategy, the company emphasizes ESG standards in the investment processes, but also in the evaluation of the issuers in which it invests, prioritizing companies with solid governance frameworks, long-term sustainable business models and a clear ESG strategy.

    This year’s award for sustainable financing is offered to a financial-banking institution that has reached a volume of sustainable financing of approximately 800 million euros in 2023. Their range includes bilateral credits in the area of ​​green energy production and green real estate developments, financing granted to some municipalities for the financing of some investments, energy efficiency and mobility projects, a range of green credits intended for the clientele of natural persons. Last year, the bank defined and adopted within the Horizons 2025 global strategic plan a series of indicators aimed at the area of ​​sustainability, i.e. reaching a volume of sustainable financing transactions of over EUR 1 billion and the ambition to be one of the leaders of the financing market sustainable.

    The company awarded in this category is the only producer of glass packaging for the food industry in Romania, as part of a European group producing glass packaging. Six years after the acquisition of the factory in Bucharest, for the next 5 years, the company has budgeted investments of over 1 billion euros in its 12 factories, of which 150 million will be invested in Romania. This new round of investment will expand the company’s production capacity in South-East Europe and also create new jobs. Currently, in Bucharest, the group produces about 2 million glass containers per day, and the group’s objective is to double its production capacity in the next 3 years. The company’s commitment to the environment is further strengthened by these investments, especially in terms of reducing CO2 emissions, strengthening the group’s public commitments related to sustainability.
