“Sustainability somehow will be developed through benchmarking with other sectors and other businesses. We are one of the world’s biggest producers of glass containers. We are present in Europe with 12 plants. We are very committed to the Romanian market. One of our biggest plants is in Bucharest. We have made very strong and solid investments in the last years, renewing our technology to deliver sustainable containers.
We are producing roughly 11 billion containers per year and we are proud to say we are one of the most sustainable companies in our sector,” Nuno Viera, Sustainability Manager, BA Glass said during Sustainability in Business Forum organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest and Sustainability Today.
“We believe that glass is the most sustainable packaging material. Every bottle that we use we can put in again in the furnace and we create a new bottle. It’s completely recyclable.
Sustainability is a connection between three pillars, namely people, planet and profit. We are a company with more than 110 years of history, so we learned a lot and we also learned how to change, how to do things differently and how to stay connected to our customers and shareholders, because we need to be profitable, we need to deliver value by innovation to our shareholders, but of course we need to go where are customers are asking us to go.
Profitability is based on sustainability practices. We have a roadmap of CO2 reduction that will cut our emissions by 50 percent in 2035 compared to 2020. We have a series of initiatives that we will do, we know exactly what to do and how to do it, and how much it will cost. We are quite sure that we will reach the objective of cutting our emissions in half before 2035.
We need to have a clear picture of our CO2 footprint. Of course, we need to measure, we need to be confident, clear and transparent about our carbon footprint and then we need to do the same job that our customers are doing with suppliers, we need to go upstream on the chain. It’s not easy and this will work only with collaboration, with suppliers, with customers.”
