Mircea Fechet, Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests recently visited CanPack Romania, the only aluminum can manufacturer in the country and the second largest factory in Europe.
With an investment of over 150 million euros, the Bucharest factory produces approximately two billion aluminum cans annually, of which 40% are intended for export. We are talking about ultra-modern production flows, which provide the necessary for all beverage producers on the domestic market. In addition, through its subsidiary CanPack Recycling, the company collects used aluminum cans and transforms them into raw material for new packaging. Up to 80% of the material used for the new cans comes from recycling, which is a successful example of a circular economy.
“I was also pleased to learn that the Guarantee-Return System (SGR) has contributed to tripling the collection capacity of recycled cans by CanPack Recycling, which now reaches monthly targets of 1,600 tons of aluminum packaging. In fact, the company manages to recycle over 80% of the amount of aluminum collected annually by RetuRo, thus making a significant contribution to reducing waste and protecting the environment. I know that the big players on the market need two things to strengthen their position, predictability and safety, and as Minister of the Environment, I propose that we take all steps, at the government level, to further support those who set the circular economy in motion,” the Minister daid.
Aluminum cans are the most recycled packaging in the world, and the fact that we have the second most important name in Europe in the production of metal packaging in Romania is proof that ambitious environmental projects, such as the SGR, have the potential to attract important investors to the market.
