Sopsa, a Portuguese company with over 30 years of experience in waste containers solutions, plans to expand across Romania. The company wants to bring its sorting and recycling-friendly systems to more Romanian cities, following a successful collaboration in Bucharest. Sopsa entered the Romanian market in 2023, seeing it as a strategic hub for regional growth in Eastern Europe.
Sopsa’s first major project in Romania is with Sector 6 of Bucharest, consisting of the installation of more than 700 high-capacity underground waste containers, all locally produced. Nearly half of the units have already been installed. Sopsa operates a production unit in Eli Parks, occupying 6,400 square meters of industrial and office space, following an initial investment of around 2 million euros.
“The Romanian market holds strong potential for modern waste management equipment, especially in urban areas looking for sustainable solutions,” says Pedro Martins da Costa, CEO of Sopsa, SA. “Underground containers have gained popularity because they enhance the aesthetics of cities, residential neighborhoods, and office areas, while providing sustainable, environmentally friendly benefits. Additionally, our local production in Romania adds another key advantage.”
Romania has the lowest recycling rate in Europe but aims to increase its municipal waste recycling rate from 55% at the end of 2025 to 65% by 2035. Reaching this target will require significant investments in upgrading the country’s waste sorting, collection, and recycling infrastructure.
Sopsa is an international company, with production units in Portugal and Romania, selling its Lasso underground waste containers in Portugal, France, Denmark, Poland, Romania and Morocco. The objective is to expand operations to other markets, like the Eastern European markets, due to their proximity to Romania, where the brand has this new production unit.
