Xiaomi has released its 2024 Annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report, highlighting the company’s continued commitment to sustainability, technology accessibility and responsible innovation.
The report, now in its seventh edition, highlights significant progress in reducing carbon emissions, promoting recycling and resource reuse, and developing inclusive technologies.
Xiaomi unveiled its new sustainable development strategy based on fundamental technologies at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in November 2024.
In 2024, Xiaomi’s annual investment in research and development (R&D) reached 3.15 billion euros, and its global patents filed exceeded 42,000. The R&D team had 21,190 employees, accounting for 48.5% of the company’s total workforce. It is estimated that in the first half of the decade 2020–2030, cumulative R&D investment will exceed 13 billion euros.
Since last year, the Xiaomi Smart Factory has also been in operation, along with the Xiaomi Electric Vehicle Factory. These two facilities use advanced industrial technologies, such as the Industrial Internet and artificial intelligence, for efficient, green and sustainable production.
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its own operations, Xiaomi is requiring its smartphone supply chain partners to set similar targets and renewable energy use plans. By 2030, these suppliers aim to reduce emissions by at least 5% annually (compared to 2024) and use at least 25% renewable energy. By 2050, the goal is to achieve 100% renewable electricity consumption.
Xiaomi operates e-waste recycling programs globally, with a phased approach that includes buy-back, refurbishing, scrapping devices and spare parts, as well as internal prototype procurement. The plan aims to recycle 38,000 tons of electronic waste between 2022 and 2026, and by the end of 2024, 95.94% of this goal had been achieved.
